As you say, these asterisks and similar markdown codes are not handled in tag wiki excerpts. This is fine, there is no reason for them to be. Their existence in a tag wiki excerpt clouds rather than ...

What extra does [equipment] tag introduce compared to [tools] tag?
This is an excellent question. I think tools is used for hand tools or tools you can pick up. Equipment would be for, as you say, larger equipment such as compactors, tractors, gas tillers.
